The Rev Fred Nile, MLC, has strongly supported, in the NSW Parliament on Tuesday 8th September, 1999, the right of the East Timorese people for self-determination, freedom, democracy and protection from bloody militia groups.

The Rev Fred Nile listed a number of urgent priorities in his Speech in the NSW Parliament on Wednesday 8th September, 1999, including:

  1. Support for action by the Australian Federal Government to institute democracy in East Timor.

  2. Disarming of the militias currently terrorising the population.

  3. Australia must bring pressure on Indonesia to halt the genocide now being perpetrated.

  4. Withdraw its recognition of Indonesia as the Government of East Timor.

  5. There must be urgent action to provide a peacekeeping force from Australia, United States, Canada and New Zealand etc.

  6. Massive economic assistance for East Timer once peace and democracy are restored.

The Rev Fred Nile MLC, concluded his Speech with the Statement:

"I am pleased to support this [East Timorese] Motion and trust that this [unanimous motion] will help Mr Howard and the Federal Government to feel that they do have the genuine support of the people of Australia in whatever action they take in the coming days to support, assist and protect the people of East Timor.
